Unequaled in AIA’s 162 year history, The Big Move for Environmental Sustainability resolution passed at the 2019 annual business meeting represents a “dramatic and unprecedented change in focus.” In conjunction with what the AIA has informally nicknamed the Big Move Toward Environmental Stewardship, the resolution marks a bold step forward in positioning the architectural profession as key...
The evolving construction industry, recent code changes, increasing sustainability requirements and challenging economy are just some of the factors increasing demand for safe, healthy, high performance educational facilities. Today’s schools are more than just buildings; they are interactive learning environments. They are gathering places. They are safe havens for the community. This presentation will discuss recommendations on how to design and build high performance, sustainable and resilient schools, with reduced life-cycle costs. The benefits of prefabrication and off-site construction will be identified in the context of precast/prestressed concrete architectural and structural building solutions. And case studies will highlight high performance attributes - including optimization of numerous versatile, efficient and resilient building applications.
With the popularity of “Cool Roofs” in the industry, it is natural that roofing manufacturers who sell dark-colored roofs will try to discredit cool roofing benefits. This presentation looks at some of the cool roofing arguments and helps to distinguish fact from fiction.
This presentation is designed to help architects, specifiers, consultants and building owners understand the primary reasons why they may want to upgrade to an EPDM rubber roof. A basic understanding of available commercial roofing options is helpful but not absolutely necessary to gain insight from this program.
Codes and standards are developed scientifically and support the needs of our society extremely well. But because we have such a large country, local variations make the codes complex and difficult to digest, understand, and comply. As architects, we are responsible for satisfying society’s demands for buildings that are safe, secure, healthy, energy efficient, accessible, functional, sustainable, and high-performance, all while complying with enforced codes and standards. This session will explore the challenges architects face with codes and standards while navigating solutions, offering best practices, and providing strategies for managing compliance.
King County, Washington, was the “epicenter” of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. Learn how DLR Group partnered with the county to deliver nearly 1,000 quarantine, assessment, and recovery beds in various communities within a matter of weeks through rapid assessment, design, and construction methods. Lessons learned will equip designers and communities to better manage pandemic events in the future.
